Black screen problem when recording video with Screen Capture software from QuickTime player
Please read our disclaimer before recording any media streams. Otherwise your activity could be considered illegal.
QuickTime Player uses a DirectShow Overlay for faster, smoother playback of the movie.
A video overlay is invisible to many Windows capture programs like SnagIt, because it is handled by a special video hardware.
Such screen capture software will then record only a solid color rectangle (usually black, pink or blue, the so called "overlay key color").
But all is not lost, the overlay use for playback may be sometimes turned off, at least temporarily for recording. Here is how to do this in the Apple's QuickTime Player ver.5-6:
- Open QuickTime player.
- Select "Edit" -> "Preferences" -> "Quick Time Preferences" from the menu.
- In "QuickTime Settings" windows select "Video settings".
- Select "Safe mode (GDI only)".
- Close the "QuickTime Settings" windows.
- Re-start QuickTime Player.
