How to record MSN videos from the Windows Media Player
Please read our disclaimer before recording any media streams. Otherwise your activity could be considered illegal.
MSN Videos and other media that come through the browser (Internet Explorer
only) is sometimes cached (saved) in Windows cache file (Temporary Internet
Files). Unless the remote server specifies in its HTTP response that the
file should not be cached IE always does this. For example Yahoo Launch videos are never cached but MSN videos are always cached.
When such a file was cached Windows Media Player only makes a connection to the URL to find
out if the file has been changed (updated). The URL is intercepted and saved
by WM Recorder when in PRO or ADA modes. If the file was cached Windows Media will just play it back from the local computer.
If in PRO mode WM Recorder
will enter the WAIT mode waiting for data that will never come. In ADA mode
however once the URL is detected WM Recorder makes its own connection and records.
There are a few ways to record media that was already cached.
- Open the Saved URL's window and double click the saved URL.
- Open the cache file and delete the cached files. To do this open IE /
Tool / Internet Options / Settings / View Files. This brings up the
Temporary Internet Files. Here click Type twice to order the files in
reverse alphabetical order. Select files of type Windows Media Player or
Data.
WM Recorder 10.2 deals with this situation in a different way.
In PRO mode, WM Recorder will switch to URL mode and records if the URL has been detected
but no data is coming.
