Recording Streaming Video and Audio: Windows Media Player (wmv, asf, wma, asx, wmx, wvx, wax, wmx, wax) [RTSP, MMS, HTTP protocols] - How to download/save/capture/record media streams from Windows Media Player

    Windows Media Streams:

    • .ASF
    • .WMV
    • .WMA
    Windows Media metafiles (redirectors):
    • .ASX
    • .WMX
    • .WVX
    • .WAX
    • .SMIL
Windows Media Recorders allow to download ASF, WMV, WMA streams. Some of them also allow to postprocess content of the following metafiles: ASX, WMX, WVX, WAX, SMIL. Metafiles are just simple text files which are used mainly to redirect you to an actual stream. If your Windows Media Recorder doesn't support metafile postprocessing you can get the URL of a media stream following our instructions.

Also WM Recorder can automatically get the URL of a stream played in your Windows Media Player. There is no need to know anything about metafiles, packet sniffing software or any protocols to start recording with WMRecorder.

Though WM Recorder can record only Windows Media streams, in some cases the only way to record a Windows Media stream is by using Browse Mode of WM recorder because it is the only stream recorder using a proxy cache to record what Windows Media Player is playing!

Some Stream Recorders allow to save only Streaming Windows Media. Other Streaming Video Recording Software allows you to download not only Windows Media Streams, but also Flash video streams, Real Media Streams and even QuickTime and SHOUTcast streams.

RTSP, HTTP, and MMS protocols are used for Streaming Windows Media (Starting with Windows Media Player 9 Series, Windows Media Services 9 Series and Windows Server 2003 RTSP Protocol is now the default protocol for streaming Windows Media).
Some Streaming Media Recorders can automatically rollover to different protocols (if protocol rollover is supported by the server and switched on). RTSP protocol is supported by the majority of new stream recorders like HiDownload and NetTrasnport. Due to RTSP protocol rollover problem in many cases Streaming Windows Media couldn't be downloaded by old software. So please download the latest versions of Stream Recorders supporting RTSP for Streaming Windows Media before asking a question.

Note that some Windows Media Recorders like WM Recorder can make ASF file seekable. If yow want to make already downloaded ASF files seekable, repair, join or split Windows Media, converting ASF/WMV format to AVI, ... please visit the following page: Fix broken Windows Media.
