StreamBox VCR
Common problems downloading Real Media, Real Audio and Windows Media streams
Do you recommend Streambox VCR?
SVCR was the best stream recorder available. However I do not recommend it anymore, because of the several reasons.
First of all the developers of this software (streambox.com) stopped supporting and delivering newer versions long ago. So new features are not being added and old bugs are not being fixed.
Second of all it is hard to find a trusted site to download Streambox VCR. Some other reasons include:
- There is no support for the newest Real servers.
- QuickTime and Windows Media support is very limited.
- SVCR crashes if you try to record more than 5 streams simultaneously.
- SVCR can't record password protected streams.
Where to download Streambox VCR?
StreamBox VCR has many patches and updates. You only need StreamBox VCR v1.0 Beta 3.1 SMF+ and StreamBox VCR v1.0 Beta 3.1 SMF+turbo, but the Suite 2.0 available in the Internet also contains outdated versions of this software.
Do not download StreamBox VCR 1.0 Suite 1 because it has only outdated versions of SVCR.
And remember to download software from trusted sites only (otherwise at least make sure you use a reliable firewall and antivirus).
StreamBox VCR Suite 2.0 is not distributed legally. It is illegal to use it in the US. If you the legislation of your country allows you to download and use this software, you can use p2p networks to download it.
How to prevent Streambox VCR from crashing?
Please do not download more than 5 streams simultaneously using Streambox VCR. If you need to download say 10 streams simultaneously you may execute 2 copies of Streambox VCR and download 5 streams in each copy.
Please also backup partly downloaded clips especially if they are large.
Though it will not prevent Streambox VCR crashes, in case of a damage of a clip and the following inability to repair it you will be able to start again but not from the scratch.
How to download password protected streams with Streambox VCR?
While Streambox VCR allows you to enter username and password in a dialog box, it is unable to download password protected streams. Please download other streaming media recording software. NetTransport is highly recommended for such streams.
Note that the notion of password protected streams doesn't refer here to the DRM protected streams.
How to change User-Agent in StreamBox VCR
Some Real Media and Real Audio (rm and ra) content providers require a special User-Agent like the following one while transferring media streams under HTTP protocol:
RMA/1.0 (compatible; RealMedia).
StreamBox VCR has a preset User-Agent
Mulder, VCR-1.0
which could not be changed in its settings. The trivial way to fix this is just to go with a hex editor and change "Mulder, VCR-1.0" to say something else like mentioned above. This will work.
Note that Stealth Mulder Fix (SMF Fix) changes the User-Agent to the one used by RealPlayer 8 Plus:
RealMedia Player Version 6.0.7.1423 (win32)
While you can not change User-Agent in the settings of StreamBox VCR, you can change it in some other
streaming media recorders like HiDownload, Net Transport, Offline Explorer Pro/Enterprise.
Can not download a stream with StreamBox VCR: filename problem
Please check the filename you're trying to save and rename the file if necessary.
For example while downloading the following stream
rtsp://somehost.com/somedir/01012004.rm?title=01/01/2004-Sometitle&start=1:30&end=2:03:18
SVCR tries to save it automatically on your hard drive as
01012004.rm?title=01/01/2004-Sometitle&start=1:30&end=2:03:18
But symbols like colons (:), slashes (/) are prohibited to use in a file name. So such stream won't be downloaded.
Please rename it first.
Also SVCR has problems with spaces in the URLs. Instead of the space
rtsp://somehost.com/some dir/01012004.rm
use %20 like in the following example
rtsp://somehost.com/some%20dir/01012004.rm
Downloading from URL's with non-alpha-numeric characters like Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, could be a problem. Please download other streaming media recording software.
Can not download a stream with StreamBox VCR / SVCR downloads low quality media (bandwidth problem)
In most cases Streambox VCR should always be set to use a high bandwidth connection.
Settings - Connection - Bandwidth - T1 LAN (1Mbps - 1000Kbps)
StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1 SMF+turbo also allows higher settings
Settings - Connection - Bandwidth - 10Mbps LAN (10Mbps - 10,000Kbps)
If StreamBox VCR is not set to use a bandwidth high enough you may not get the high quality media and may instead get a smaller, low quality media which may cause problems such as still frame video. Also you won't be able to download live streams with the bandwidth higher than in your recording software settings.
At the same time users with low bandwidth can receive high quality media except live streams (not in real time of course). They only need to use the appropriate settings.
Note that setting SMF+turbo to 10Mbps LAN will cause all other versions of 3.1 to be set to use 14k modem since they share the same setting position in the list and share all the same registry settings. Once you are done recording at that 10Mbps LAN bandwidth you should set it back to T1 LAN to avoid connection bandwidth problems with the other 3.1 SVCR versions.
Can not download Windows Media stream with StreamBox VCR using RTSP protocol
SVCR is unable to download Windows Media Streams using RTSP. Please download other streaming media recording software.
Can not download QuickTime video using RTSP protocol with StreamBox VCR
StreamBox VCR can download HTTP Protocol Quicktime.
As for RTSP Protocol QuickTime video StreamBox VCR 3.1 SMF+turbo or SMF+ versions can download such video, but can not make a playable file from it.
Currently there are no stream recorders capable of downloading playable RTSP QuickTime video.
You may use screen capturing software instead.
Can not download Windows Media stream with StreamBox VCR using MMS protocol
If you have trouble downloading a MMS Protocol stream with StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1 and have tried all the protocols
- HTTP Protocol
- MMS(TCP) Protocol
- MMS(HTTP) Protocol
- Only HTTP as MMS(HTTP) Protocol
then try StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.0 which can download many MMS Protocol Streams that 3.1 can't. StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.0 is included in StreamBox VCR Suite 2.0.
Also try changing the URL
- If it starts with http:// change it to mms://
- If it starts with mms:// change it to http://
and the port number. Port numbers in URL's like
mms://www.site.com:1755/
are not needed in most cases. If a port is not in the URL then the standard port will be used.
Standard ports for the protocols are:
- MMS port 1755.
- RTSP port 554.
- PNM port 7070 (also known as PNA port).
- HTTP ports 80 and 8080.
StreamBox VCR is unable to use URL's where the t for TCP or u for UDP transport is specified with the protocol in the stream URL like in the following example:
- mmst://somesite.com/
- mmsu://somesite.com/
To solve the problem just remove the t or u.
mms://somesite.com/
Most other streaming media recorders accept but do not need the t for TCP or u for UDP in the stream URL. The recorder program may determine the proper transport or may have other ways of setting this.
In case of downloading file with audio but no video (which is commonly the case with MMS media stream and StreamBox VCR) or in case of a failure downloading a stream, try using other streaming media recording software.
Can not download Real Media stream with StreamBox VCR using RTSP prootocol
If you have trouble downloading a RTSP Protocol Real Media stream with StreamBox VCR v1.0 beta 3.1 you are probably not using an updated version and the server is probably any version of RealServer 9+ or RealServer 8.0.2.471.
The StreamBox VCR Log will show something similar to this.
- Waiting...
- Filename C:\directory\filename.rm
- Attempt 1
- rtsp://www.site.com/directory/filename.rm
- Flying Raichu RTSP protocol
- Looking host www.site.com
- Host found 123.234.123.45
- Connecting www.site.com:554, ip: 123.234.123.45
- Receiving Data
- Indexs created
- Connection lost
- Retry idle 20 seconds
- Attempt 2
- Connecting www.site.com:554, ip: 123.234.123.45
- Found lost index tag, truncating file to 430, indexs created
- Connection lost
You should download updated 3.1 SMF+ or 3.1 SMF+turbo versions of StreamBox VCR to download RTSP Protocol Media from these servers. Old versions like 3.1 and 3.1 SMF are outdated for downloading many RTSP Protocol streams.
Also try to set a protocol manually. For Real Media streams (RM, RA, RAM) you should try all protocols that could be applied to these types of media:
- HTTP Protocol
- RTSP Protocol
- PNM(TCP) Protocol
- PNM(HTTP) Protocol
- Only HTTP as PNM(HTTP) Protocol
Also try changing the URL:
- If it starts with http:// change it to rtsp:// or pnm://.
- If it starts with rtsp:// change it to pnm:// or http://.
- If it starts with pnm:// change it to rtsp:// or http://.
Also try adding or changing the port number. Port numbers in a URL like
rtsp://www.site.com:554/
pnm://www.site.com:7070/
are not needed in most cases. If a port is not in the URL then the standard port will be used.
Standard ports for these protocols are:
- RTSP port 554.
- PNM port 7070 (also known as PNA port).
- HTTP ports 80 and 8080.
- MMS port 1755.
Sometimes streams use a non-standard port for the protocol.
For example sometimes if you change pnm://www.site.com/ to rtsp://www.site.com/ you may have to specify that the RTSP is streamed from a non-standard RTSP port, PNM port 7070.
rtsp://www.site.com:7070/
For example sometimes RTSP is streamed using a non-standard RTSP port and you may have to specify that the RTSP is streamed from HTTP ports 80 or 8080.
rtsp://www.site.com:80/
rtsp://www.site.com:8080/
Can not download Real Media stream with StreamBox VCR using PNM prootocol
If you have trouble downloading a PNM Protocol Real Media stream with StreamBox VCR the server is probably any version of RealServer 9 or RealServer 8.0.2.471. The StreamBox VCR Log will show this:
You need to obtain a new player to play this clip. Please point your web browser to
www.realone.com
and download the latest RealPlayer from RealNetworks. Once you have installed it you should try this clip again.
StreamBox VCR cannot download PNM Protocol Streams from these servers.
Try changing the protocol in the URL to RTSP because there is often a matching RTSP Protocol stream.
Example:
pnm://www.site.com/filename.rm
Change to RTSP Protocol using default port.
rtsp://www.site.com/filename.rm
Change to RTSP Protocol using PNM port.
rtsp://www.site.com:7070/filename.rm
In case of a failure try using other streaming media recording software like Real7ime Converter or use screen capturing software.
StreamBox VCR ignores start and end times from the URL
In many cases for on-demand streams, the server supports start and end times so the stream can be recorded in parts.
Sometimes URL may have the times showing the beginning and the end of the streaming media like in the following example:
rtsp://somehost.com/somedir/01012004.rm?title=01/01/2004-Sometitle&start=1:30&end=2:03:18
You may try to add start and end times manually to record a part of a stream.
But StreamBox VCR starts downloading from the beginning and continues up to the end ignoring start and end times.
You may wish to try other streaming media recorders like Real7ime converter.
