Streaming media proxy and caching solutions for Windows Media, Real Video/Audio and Quick Time streams
- NetCache
NetCache streaming media appliances greatly enhance streaming media quality at a fraction of the cost of deploying more media servers and adding network bandwidth. NetCache simultaneously supports multiple streaming media formats including Microsoft® Windows Media™, RealNetworks® RealSystem®, and Apple® QuickTime™. In December of 2001, NetApp became the first and only company to pass rigorous certification testing performed by both Microsoft and RealNetworks. When deployed, the same appliance can support HTTP, FTP, and NNTP caching which saves bandwidth and cuts costs.
With the NetCache appliances you can:
- Prevent bandwidth cost increases and offer very high-quality on-demand streaming media by delivering it from the edge of the network
- Automatically split streams to thousands of simultaneous users at the edge to reduce bandwidth demands and bottlenecks
- Support multicast
- Helix Proxy
Helix Proxy is software you install on a network or ISP gateway that aggregates and handles client requests for live and on-demand media streamed from externally hosted Helix Servers. Helix Proxy reduces
network traffic by eliminating redundant requests for streaming media.
Helix Proxy is intended for deployment on a corporate intranet, acting as a gateway that services internal RealPlayer requests for streaming media that is hosted on Helix Servers inside or outside of the network. Helix Proxy can also be used by service providers looking for a solution to place at a POP such that they can manage requests for content originating outside their network.
- CISCO white paper
This white paper explains the implementation of the Windows Media
Technology Proxy included in Cisco(r) Application and Content Networking
System (ACNS). Topics discussed include the various content formats
supported, the ingress methods supported at the Cisco content engine,
and the egress distribution methods supported to the request client. It
is assumed that the reader is familiar with concepts of IP multicast
streaming media and the general functionality of origin servers, such as
the Windows Media Technology Server.
The Cisco Systems integration of the Microsoft Windows Media Technology Proxy into the content engine supports essential proxy features. It accepts incoming Windows Media Technology streaming requests from clients, and acts on behalf of the clients requesting from the origin server. Microsoft's Windows Media Encoder and Codec version 9 are supported in Cisco ACNS 5.1. The Windows Media Technology Proxy accepts and serves the streaming requests over Microsoft Media Server (MMS) Protocol as well as HTTP transports to the requesting client's media player or browser. Windows Media Player versions 4.0, 6.4, 7.1, and 9.0 are supported clients for Cisco ACNS 5.1.
